Chapter Fifteen

Penelope

The morning starts as usual. I’m actually on time. I manage to beat the traffic, grab a cup of coffee and reach my desk with a minute to spare. Focusing on work will be quite a task today, but hopefully, I’ll manage somehow.

Just as I’m about to start work, my phone rings. My heart jumps at the possibility that it might be him, calling. Why? Just to check up on me?

Don’t be silly, my brain reminds me. Why would he be doing such a thing?

To resolve any possible doubt, I grab my phone, but only after I’ve checked in the hallway in front of my office, to make sure that no one might overhear me using my personal phone during work hours.

When I see Jenny’s name, I can’t help but feel disappointed, although it makes total sense that it would be her. She is the one who is checking up on me. Not my fake fiancé, who is probably already planning his weekend with some hot model. He got what he wanted from me, and now, I’m left to deal with the aftermath of his plan alone. Sure, mom will be disappointed. Sure, I’ll feel like shit, but hey, if that’s what needs to happen, then that’s what will happen. Problem solved.

“Hey,” I whisper into the phone, lowering myself behind my desk, just in case if someone passes by, they wouldn’t see me through the window.

“Hey, you,” she chirps back. “How are things?”

“Well, I’m at work, so…” I reply, feeling a bit guilty, but still happy to hear her. Just hearing her voice made me feel a bit better.

“Got it, got it,” she quickly replies. “I just wanted to tell you that everyone is absolutely smitten by your pretty boy.”

“Pretty boy,” I chuckle.

“We can’t wait for the wedding,” she continues. “Your mom is already having us pick out the potential colors for the bridesmaids dresses.”

“Goodness,” I shake my head. “I told her not to rush things.”

“Yeah, you know your mom. We all know your mom.”

“That’s true,” I smile. But this time, it’s a sad smile. It’s the smile of still being happy about something, despite knowing that it will end pretty soon, and there is nothing you can do about it.

“You know, I’ve been meaning to come up there, and maybe stay with you for the weekend,” she suggests. “You owe me a full account on how you guys met and the whole shebang. You can’t deny me that.”

I smile. “Sure thing. You know you are welcome any time you want to come. I’ve got a roll out sofa bed with your name on it in the living room.”

“Great,” she replies. “If I manage to arrange everything, I’ll come up this weekend, so we can catch up properly.”

“Sounds great,” I confirm.

“Make sure you’ve got lots of booze,” she jokes. “I plan on keeping you up all night to find out everything there is to know about this man.”

“Oh, well…” I reply a little nervously. “Most of his life is already online.
